As part of the Trump Foundation’s efforts to nurture the clinical skills of mathematics and science teachers in Israeli secondary schools, we have explored the use of video recordings of classroom practice and their analysis. This innovative approach is gaining grounds around the world and has been the subject of a number of the foundation’s grants in the past two years. As a result, the Ministry of Education has decided to issue a tender for using classroom-based videos in professional development workshops, and selected approximately 20 providers to pilot test it in their courses during the coming year.
Recognizing that these teacher trainers may benefit from collaborating, sharing and joint learning, we have asked the Davidson Institute, the educational arm of the Weizmann Institute, to plan a workshop for providers of in-service training for math and science teachers. The program will include 6 meetings, during which the participants will present their work, explore together the theoretical background, and discuss the various applications for using filmed lessons in the professional development of teachers. Experts experienced in both professional development of mathematics and science teachers and in the use of video for those purposes, will lead the workshop.
At the end of the workshop there will be a one-day conference for teacher-trainers, instructors and facilitators to present the results of the program and to assimilate the practices and lessons in different professional development frameworks. As a result, a summary document of the program will be published to help organizations which are engaged in similar work to implement teacher-learning through filmed lessons; the gained knowhow will be assimilated at the Davidson Institute, and integrated into various programs for professional development of science and mathematics teachers.
