Schools were created in and for an industrial age, preparing workers for mostly repetitive and manual tasks. Classrooms replicated the work environment, with students organized in rows, lessons divided into shifts, and curricula prepared in standard manuals and operated via textbooks. Teaching was dedicated to instilling knowledge and technique, while excellence was a rare alternative for the very few. Since then, the world has been changing dramatically and teaching is requiring more expertise, professionalism, and personalization.
Within these changes, the promotion of excellence is also in turmoil. In this session we will focus on pedagogy and talk with excellent teachers to explore their views on these global changes and their implications for education.

Questions

  • What are your reactions to what you have just heard from those who recruit talent for tech service, degrees, and careers?

  • How do you perceive your role with respect to understanding the changes that are happening in the world and prepare your students accordingly?

  • How have you modified your teaching practices to adapt to the new world and the new generation? What else should be done?
